We purchased the Cantor sofa in Celadon from Star Furniture on Katy Feeeway in late October, 2017.
After doing deep-cleaning on the house after a busy year of college tours and vacations, being seldom home, and having a fulltime housekeeper, when we turned over the sofa cushions, we discovered the underside of the seat cushions were all rough and worn out. The material had pilfers and looked like someone had sat on them wearing wet blue jeans.
I was horrified. I had suspected the sofa wasn’t up to par shortly after we purchased it- but it looked good superficially and I thought to myself, “Well, I guess that’s what you get for only $2,000.00 these days.” (Our last sofa in that room - the Family Room- was a higher quality and purchased at a deep discount from Noel Furniture for $3500 on sale (70% off).
When I ran my hand across the seat cushions on day one, the fabric looked and felt smooth. But the cushion underneath felt lumpy like cellulite.
I was in the midst of redecorating that room before the holidays and did not have time to take 10 steps back and select another sofa. I needed chairs, drapes, accessories, etc.
So in April when we vacuumed the sofa and turned the cushions, that’s when we discovered they had literally worn out on the underneath, unused side! Mind you, this is less than 6 months of light use. Only 2 adults and one teenager in the house. And the teens always sit in the media room or another den.
We have been in contact with both Star Furniture and Bernhardt and they are giving us the Royal runaround. Star Furniture has sent one guy out who was defensive, aloof, and not amicable. I’m an architect and an interior designer so I understand double rubs in terms of fabric durability and I know what I’m talking about. I have purchased other items from Bernhardt and have been very happy with them (a writing desk and chair and a cocktail table).
The guy said he didn’t see any problem with the fabric and asked what I wanted them to do. I said, “This couch is a lemon. It has fallen apart after only 6 months. So, I want a new couch in a higher grade fabric.”
Three weeks later, playing phone tag with Star Furniture l. So we carried a seat cushion and a back cushion into the store and met with one of the general managers. He was pleasant but not helpful at all. He agreed that the cushions were unduly worn out but he didn’t know why. He said he wanted to send out a Second person “to see the rest of the home!!!” How insulting. So, I showed him my iPhone pics which show our family room as it’s on my Facebook company page as part of my design portfolio.
We have no pets and we are not slobs.
To contrast this, the sofa in our formal living room was purchased in 1999 and looks better and newer than this fabric (grade C, cleaning code S) on the Cantor sofa.
Clearly, Bernhardt uses inferior products that don’t last. They may have good designs but very poor execution.
I will no longer purchase from this store or this manufacturer.
