Ploy to get you to cancel service calls

Likely, due to heavy rainfall and the fact that our neighborhood has underground wiring boxes, our CenturyLink phone service died (as in no dial tone and no calls in or out). After more than two days of this, I called CenturyLink for a service call. They scheduled it (5 days in the future, claiming that was the earliest possible). In the meantime, they clearly set up some sort of of "pinging" arrangement whereby every hour in short several hour stints during the day and night (middle of the nigh/early morning), their system would ring our number for, as they stated subsequently, verification and data gathering for their technician(s). As it turns out, as things dried out, our phone service returned a day after I made the initial call. so their phone calls which consisted of just one ring, and no way for us to answer, began happening during the day and middle of the night. For example, last night, our phones rang (once) at 12:48am, 1:48am and 2:48am. This has happened in the daytime as well, but is clearly less irritating than when it awakens you with a start in the middle of the night. Now, I've called CenturyLink twice today to, first, determine what was going on, and second, to get them to stop, now that they've admitted it was them. Basically, they could not stop this verification (irritation) ringing unless I cancelled the service call. After multiple calls and discussions with their service reps about this, it is clear to me that this is a "play" on their part to get customers like me to cancel what they may interpret as (now) unncecessary service calls. It's kind of a harassment into reasoning...their reasoning. Pretty pitiful, if you ask me...
