I called Direct TV to get new service to my house and was told several times by the sales rep that I had 15 days to cancel my service without any penalty. I tried to cancel my service just 48 hours after set-up, even though I had 15 days. I cancelled because I had technical problems with my service with channels & I was promised several channels that I had to upgrade & pay more money in order to get, which I feel that it was wrong that I had to do when I was told that it was included on my initial set-up call. Also, I could not activate my AT & T high-speed internet account because of many issues such as getting scheduled & also being told after-the-fact that I'd have to buy a $100 equipment box that I was not told about during my initial set-up. This policy was confirmed by the technician who came to do the installation. I asked him to verify that I have 15 days to cancel from the install date & he said "yes".
Direct TV is not honoring their 15 day cancellation policy that I was told about, and is trying to charge me $460 for getting out of my contract early. I feel that this is fraud on their part & hope something can be done about it. I cancelled my credit card that I gave them, so they cannot automatically take that money from me, but I'm sure I will be sent to collections & would like information on trying to avoid getting my credit hit for this.
Since this has happened to me, I have read many stories on the internet of this exact same senario happening to other people...I am not the only one. Direct TV needs to be held accountable for their fraudulant business practices.

Did they just telll you, or you read it in your SIGNED CONTRACT? Probably not.

Extended contract without my knowledge
I have been a Direct TV custome for 3 years. My original contract was for two years. Last year I purchased an additional receiver on line. Yesterday I called Direct TV to cancel my service due to high bill. They told me that my contract had been extended for two years becausen I activated a new receiver. The also stated that the receiver I purchased on line was actually theirs and that I'm only leasing it. Great racket huh? -- they extend my contract without giving me any notice or benefit for it. Does anyone know how I can fight this?

Same exact thing happened to me, it cost me $340 to cancel. Most unethical business I've ever felt with. STAY AWAY!!!
