Manager Talladega East St N Store

Copy of email sent to Marlene White District Manager

On 7/16/2017 approximately 8:30 I purchased a few items from my local Dollar General in Ragland, Alabama. I frequent this store regularly so the staff and I have an on-going relationship. They are always friendly, polite, helpful and a pleasure to do business with. The same day at approximately 11:30 I entered the Dollar General on East St N, Talladega, AL to purchase forgotten items that morning. I get a Coke from the cooler, begin shopping and realize I have no cash for my purchase. I place the Coke back in the cooler and proceed to exit the store when I am aggressively accosted by the store manager, a thin elderly woman with long blonde hair. She demands “Where is the Coke you had?”. I politely tell her I had returned to cooler. She then demands to search my purse. Caught completely off guard, intimidated and having nothing to hide I open my purse so she can see. She demands I open all three compartments, which I do. She then tells me to pull up my shirt so she can check my pockets. Again, trying to comply I lift my shirt and show her that nothing is in my pockets. I again politely say Ma’am I put the Coke back in the cooler. She then states “I have your tag number do not ever come in this store again”. I am mortified and highly upset. I get in my car and while texting a friend about the situation I overhear the manager on the phone talking about me. She is standing directly in front of my car telling someone how I was now just sitting in my car. I politely say Ma’am I will wait on whoever you are calling, no problem. I wanted to clear my name and understandably highly upset. She states that is what she wants me to do. I was unclear whom was on the phone but assumed it was the police. I waited for ten minutes while she stood in front of my car glowering at me. She walked away for maybe a minute or two but told a gentleman employee I was a thief and he needed to stand in her place. These few minutes allowed me time to process the events and realize regardless of who she was talking to she had no right to detain me and how ridiculous this situation was. Since the police never arrived I proceeded to drive off. She began another phone conversation and walked behind my car as I exited the parking lot. I next stopped at my Dollar General in Ragland to find out what the company’s procedures were and the manager’s opinion on how the situation was handled. I am told there is a strict policy of never pursuing anyone outside of store, manager should not have searched my purse much less asked me to lift my shirt. Tamika, the Ragland manager said if shoplifting is suspected the manager is to call the police and review the store video surveillance. She gave me the district manager Marlene White’s name and phone number and told me to not only call her but to also call Talladega police and report. I was so upset when the incident occurred my good judgement momentarily left. I should have called the police myself and demanded tapes be reviewed immediately. However, I am 51 years old woman who has never been so aggressively pursued, spoken to in that manner or accused of stealing anything. In hindsight I realize even if I overlooked how this manager had treated me once she found nothing on my person she should have immediately said “Thank you ma’am for complying and have a good day”. This would have defused the entire event and I would have thought nothing about it. However, everything about this incident was uncalled for, rude and totally inappropriate not to mention poor customer’s relations. If not for my experiences in the Ragland store I would never shop Dollar General again and express my displeasure loudly with any audience I could get. Instead, I am now demanding a review of the surveillance tapes to prove my innocence, the manager either fired or demoted, the Talladega police called clearing my name and an apology from Dollar General upper management. No one should ever experience the intimidation, humiliation, false accusations and embarrassment that I did today in Talladega. I will expect a call from the district manager, Marlene White, once this situation is rectified.

Thank you for your prompt and through attention to this matter.

staff

I had a coupon from the newspaper which was $1 savings more than the digital coupon. The cashier was being trained by the manager. The manager was rude and uncaring. She said there was nothing she could do about it. She could have cancelled the transaction and started again but instead acted sarcastic and thereby teaching the trainee to act the same way. The people that work at store# 02774 in Boaz Alabama have been rude to me time and again and I have had enough. I will shop at Walmart where at least u are treated with respect and kindness.
