Unauthorised debits

I was told would receive $250 in free gifts. Then signed up for 20 payments of $49 for magazines over the next few years. Phoned back the next day to cancel and was told unable to cancel or they didn't have the correct number...
They went ahead and charged me and now they are harassing mee for the outstanding fees. I have not received one magazine!!!
Can you help please??
