On Sunday 16 August at about 19:30 I went to Eugene Marais to the emergency room, my groin was very painful and I could barely walk, due to me being on Warfarin I was concerned I might have a blood clot. I was assisted by Dr L Engelbrecht and she did blood test and she put me on a drip. My INR results came back that my INR was 9+ so she gave me medicine to thicken my blood and send me for X-ray’s. After the X-ray’s she said they saw fog in my groin / hip and I would need a sonar and would have to be admitted to hospital. Due to Eugene Marais not being a Netcare hospital they searched for a ICU bed for me from all Netcare hospital around Pretoria and the only hospital that they could find was Akasia hospital. Confirmation was received that Akasia is covered my MY medical aid.
Dr L Engelbrecht assured me that she had arrange 2x specialist doctors for me.
DR B Mphahlele (83365238)
DR Sibanyoni
You can speak to sister Viljoen at Eugene Marais hospital to confirm all details.
They phoned Life Med Ambulance to transfer me and it clearly also states on their report I have hematidrosis to the hip, my hip is painful and I am unable to walk.
I arrived at Akasia ICU ward the 17/8 at about 4 in the morning and was assisted to get undressed and put on their medical wear, I requested nurse for a blanket as I was getting very cold she could not find one and brought me another sheet. About an hour later I requested the sister that I need the bathroom and needed to change my pad and tampon as I was bleeding extremely and she said she could not assist, as she has already throw away her protective wear I should wait for next shift as my covid results was still outstanding.
Dr Mphahlele arrived and stood at the door and asked what was wrong, I said that my leg was very painful and my INR was 9 and if I could get medicine for my leg. He did not examine me at all.
The next day 17/8 @ 08:18 I received a sms from Fedhealth to advised me Dr Mphahlele was not a Fedhealth network provider and that costs above the scheme rate will be for my own account. I called Fedhealth and the lady on the phone advised me Akasia hospital is not on their panel and that I should ask for a transfer. I called the nurse and she advised she will call the case worker for me as they are one of fedhealth’s providers as they can motivate as to why this Dr and hospital was used.
At around 12:00 they came to give me a sonar on my leg. The report shows I have no blood clots, while talking to the Dr I asked but what was causing the pain in my leg and she advised she did not know.
About an hour later I was advised I will be moved to the ward. I was moved to surgical ward and immediately enquired why surgical ward and what was wrong with me. The sisters could not answer me. I asked to see my Dr and they advised he will be around later for rounds. I requested pain medication again. I advised the nurse that I needed to see the case worker immediately as I cannot lie in a hospital that my medical aid will not pay for.
The next morning 18/8 DR Mphahlele came to see me and said he will change my medicine from warfarin to something else, but the other medicine is very expensive and the medical aid would not cover it.
He will await my INR results for later the day. I immediately enquired about my painful leg and told him it is getting worse and the pain was initially in my groin it has now spread through my whole leg and I said I could only walk on it if I have received paid medication, this is then the first time the doctor put his hands on my leg and starting examining me and said I would need a X ray.
I immediately was very shocked “as I arrived at Akasia with my X ray from Eugene Marais hospital” and advised him of this. He said he would be right back and after a while when I went to search for him at the nurses station advised me he has left. I enquired about my X rays and none of them knew where it where they would phone reception to try and find it.
I went back to my bed and took my file and took pictures of everything inside my file and my X ray was lying in my file.
I went back to the nurses station and told them that I would like to be discharged as I cannot go any longer like this as they are not treating me for my leg and I do not know what is going on with my INR, they phoned Dr Mphahlele in front of me on speaker phone she advised him that I would like to check myself out and asked what form she should use, he did not even enquire why I wanted to check out and only said give her the RHT form and put down the phone.
DR Sibanyoni, did not even make an effort to come to hospital , and I never even spoken or heard anything from anyone regarding Dr Sibanyoni.
I am utterly disgusted an disappointed with the way DR Mpahlele and the staff members treated me. This is the most shocking experience I had to endure from a Private hospital in my life. Initially I thought of involving my lawyer and the media about this ordeal, and that this should be exposed, as I am a hard working tax paying citizen of South Africa, with a medical AID, and did not expect to be treated in this manner – hence I am sending this complaint. I feel that absolutely no service or people skills was involved here, and that this is not the way any hospital should be operating.
I walked out of the hospital and went and did my INR at Vermaak and partners and my INR was 1. My husband picked me up and took me to my house dr. Dr van Niekerk (1568329), he did a sonar on my leg and found that my glands where swollen and my acid levels in my blood was very high and this is what was causing the pain in my leg, he prescribed the following medicine to me: Austell Allopurinol 300, Exinef 120mg, Tramazac.
