Dishonest collection practices / Extortion

I had real late (legitimate) tax payment. So it goes to collection, I pay the debt within a couple weeks in FULL. As it was a tax payment of course there are state penalties and interest. I expect the fines..I was late so I have to pay right, right. Well this company is calling me like a day after I made my payment maybe a couple days.

Either way I am shocked when they call as I know I JUST paid what I owed. The rep tells me I owe additional penalty and interest AND collection FEES!

Look if I screw up I own it. But to tell me I owe collection fees when the state has not even told me what the amount for penalty and interest is seems like extortion totally scammy practices in my book. When she described the new balance something didn't sound right so I asked to have fax sent. I had not even rec'd a bill, she is already telling me because the account is in collections I OWE the collection fees.

Someone please tell me this is illegal! Not to make me feel good, I really mean so I could go after these vultures. If I hadn't just changed bookkeepers I would / might have blindly paid the extra. Fortunately I questioned her then maybe the next week I get an invoice from the State telling me I owe $x amount. No fees for collection. It is my first bill for my penalties why would I owe collection fees as I hadn't even been notified what I owed.

Had they in anyway made it available to calculate it online I would have paid the same day. This is just ridiculous I am a small business and want to pay on time. We had staffing changes in accounting which is why I was late to start. I thought it was like $100 / month penalty to be late. BEWARE pay your sales tax on time because they rack up some really stiff penalties for the original bill 2 quarters $7538.04 & $2835.92 my penalties were $4604.01 in total. They are trying to nail me an additional $460.39 for RECOVERYFEEs. This is insane, initially when she called I said I would have it taken care of. As she explained the amounts I said something didn't sound right so I had her fax me the statement.

Again I had new accounting staff so we don't have our rhythm in bill paying yet, so I had enough time to get the State's invoice which had no collection fees. Seemed correct because I had not even had time to pay the unknown amount. Meanwhile Pioneer Collection called me again, I was already telling my accounting people to get going and pay the bill. Who wants the Govt chasing you for back due tax!

So Pioneer called again, I said it would be done this week or whatever, but that I had rec'd the State bill and did not see how I owed a collection fee. She said since this bill account was in collection I was responsible for the fees. This is insane someone please give me a legal resource to deal with this Racketeering practice. Everyone is entitled to be paid for their service but this is just straight up double dipping. Nice way to treat someone who is trying to get their bills up to date. Would be nice if they made such effort in helping a small business grow in NJ instead of just reaming us with taxes.

It's not enough I have to hear from my customers why is it they have to pay sales tax on my services to begin with.Anyway just want to let others know of the tactics these SOB's use and I do mean it if someone has a legal referral I would love to pursue something, I did a quick search and see some of the nightmares others have had with this company, mostly around Student Loans. I don't know if other states use this company, but watch out and challenge their BS.
