Short term leave claims handling
I work in claims, so it takes a LOT for me to find fault in another insurance company or 3rd party administrator.
That being said? In a word, my two experiences with this company have been horrific. Absolutely horrific. Stressful, jumping through hoops, cutting through red tape and doing ALL the leg work. Representatives assigned to my case that rarely, if ever, follow up. Front line employees who only know how to read from a script and simply regurgitate the script whenver questioned beyond their scope. The difficulties caused from dealing with their process in and of itself could constitute a disability claim from the stress alone.
I am looking into filing a formal complaint for bad faith claim handling.

Incompetent
My company unfortunately changed over to Sedgwick for our Short Term Disability in January of this year. Hands down this is one of the worst companies I've ever had to deal with period. Anytime a call is made out to Sedgwick you are given inaccurate and incomplete information regarding your claim. Every representative has their own outlook on your claim which normally requires you to submit additional information that if you did not call in you would have had no clue these documentations were needed. I provided every piece of documentation as requested by Sedgwick and was still denied my claim. The reason why- they needed additional documentation. Yet again this information was never updated to me via email, a phone call or in the mail. My doctor was not even made aware of this much needed paperwork. Paperwork that when it is sent in each and every employee denies that it's been received unless you remain adamant about it being sent then TADA they somehow "found" the "missing" documents but yet need more, again. I was told this past Friday additional documentations would be required and my date to have it in would be March 30th. On March 28th after making yet another call to Sedgwick I was made aware my claim was denied for not providing office visit notes which was something I was never asked for before. NOW I'm having to go through an appeals process for a claim that shouldn't be closed until tomorrow. This company deals with people who are going through some of the most traumatic events of their lives and they do nothing but add to the stress. No compassion no empathy and no customer service what so ever. They either lack the ability and know how to do their job or they have a payroll full of people getting paid that do not give a damn about their jobs or the people they are there to assist. Upon making yet another call out to Sedgwick today I was told by one Representative that she had no clue looking at my claim what was going on and why. She requested that a Supervisor return my call to help. The supervisor returns my call to immediately begin telling me how I was given incorrect information and I need to complete an appeals process. She stated my denial letter and appeal process should be in the mail today. Needless to say it wasn't and I don't expect to ever receive one. This company on its best days are trash. Forget retraining your employees just go away. This place is hopeless.

Denial of STD Extension Request
Sedgwick has several name descriptions on the website when it comes to STD or LTD and extension request. This company is so insufficient, inadequate, and unprofessional company that I have ever encountered. I never ever had any form of surgery until recently in October of 2014. My STD was eventually approved after going back and forth with my provider and Sedgwick (when I should have been focusing on my recovery -oh by the way, I had spinal fusion of the L5 S1). My provider requested an extension and it was denied. What I love about any of these 3rd party Administrators, once you have your surgery done, they immediately send your doctor an URGENT fax letter that the surgeon must complete. The required questionnaire ask the provider what is the return work date. The doctor must predict when they think you might be ok to to return to work without seeing the patient, because there is a deadline for the form to be returned.. In my case, my appointment was the following month and the doctor could not alter the date they had provided the previous month due to the URGENT fax!!!! So now , I had to submit an extension request which was denied, and now I must exercise my appeal rights. Even though they "suck or are the devil", I do advise everyone to file an appeal and gather all the medical notes, xrays, mri"s to submit with your appeal. Ask your doctor to write a letter to accompany with your appeal. More than likely, my appeal will be denied. But they have 45 days to render a decision. I never received a denial notice via email, I was informed of their decision by management. In fact, management encouraged me to file an appeal. I have read on several websites...that people have tried to file lawsuit against their employer. This is INCORRECT...if you follow the proper protocol, you first file an appeal, if denied, then you will have to find an attorney that handles STD cases. You are actually filinig lawsuit against Sedgwick and not your employer (if Sedgwich was hired) they are the 3rd party hired to administered your disability benefits. I wish everyone the best and wish me luck!
