A Malibu resident, who was
described as having been out hiking
in a vacant field near Malibu
West on Saturday morning, was
an apparent suicide, according to
authorities.
The body of David Bassett, 53,
was found in a vacant lot near
Frondosa Drive and Principio
Drive, according to the Los Angeles
County Coroner’s Office,
which said he was the victim of a
self-inflicted shotgun wound.
Sheriff ’s deputies, who responded
to the 911 call, indicated
that, based on what they saw at
the scene, the shooting appeared
to be a suicide.
A spokesperson for the coroner’s
office also confirmed that
the suicide determination was
made based “on what was found
at the scene.”
