I found a $3.99 charge on my Telus phone bill described as a third party charge from Triton Global for 3473680986 Dir_Assist. I did not request or authorize any directory assistance services. Telus said they would refund the charge "one time." It appears that people are unknowingly being hit with third party charges they did not authorize and were not aware of. Telus advised that if people dial toll free numbers such as 800, 877, 866 and are redirected to another number, here is where the extra charges kick in. Apparently the telephone companies are getting a percentage of each third party billing.
If you have been a victim, please complain to your phone company, and in Canada to the CRTC and Canadian Anti Fraud Centre. Note the CCTS (Commission for Telecommunications Complaints) won't take the complaint since the third party biller is not a telecommunications provider.
