excuses not to pay a claim
In June of 2019, we had ONLY United HealthCare as our medical insurance (really, how many people can afford to carry two??). I gave my card to my primary physician, paying the stated copay, and they submitted it. Claim was paid... until it wasn't. The money was taken back, given again, taken back again. Many phone calls later, I was asked to submit proof I didn't have another insurance company. I asked UHC how I was supposed to prove something I didn't have. They told me Cigna was my primary. I got and mailed (return receipt requested) a termination date letter from the previous insurance of over a year. Upon receiving that letter, UHC then stated I had Aetna as my primary insurance. I sent the letter from a previous employers' Cobra group stating a termination date. That wasn't good enough either. I then got and sent a termination date letter for that previous insurer and waited, yet again. Sadly, that letter "was never received." After multiple phone calls over many weeks/months and very long "hold" times (had to explain situation every time), a supervisor gave me her email address. I emailed the termination date letter to her, she said it would all be taken care of. The next day I got a voicemail from UHC saying everything was updated, with a (another) confirmation code. Today, two weeks after being told I had to do nothing further, I got a collections letter regarding the claim. Again, I called UHC. Again, I've been told to wait another two weeks and it would be fixed. Really, UHC?? Working with their representatives is awful. They have no power to do anything to bring resolution. And meanwhile, the banker's daughter who pays her bills promptly has been sent to collections - through NO fault of my own.
