Fraud

To whom it may concern,

ASSISTANCE REQUIRED

our credit card was stolen from an ATM in May.

On the 7th of May I went to a Nedbank ATM at Shoprite in Sea Point to withdraw money from my HNB bank card. My card never came out from the ATM. I stayed there till the next person took money from the ATM. That person took their money and left. My card still did not come out. I went to Sea Point Nedbank and told the lady what had happened. She told me that she would sort it out on the following Monday as the people who work with the ATMs will only be back on Monday. She did not contact me on Monday so I phoned her. She told me that the person who has the keys is not there.

Because I still had not heard from here I went back to the bank on Sunday to enquire about my card and the lady at the reception told me that the person handling my case was not in and took down my number and said that that lady would phone me on Monday. As she once again did not phone me I phoned her to be told that they had not emptied that ATM yet.

After not hearing from her again the following week I phoned her and told her that i needed answers. On the 31st she phoned me to inform me that the card was not at the ATM. I told her that that was not possible to be told that all the foreign cards found at the ATM had been destroyed on the 31st.

I checked my HNB account on that Saturday to find that someone had used my HNB card on the 1st of June and 2nd of June at a place called Tyger Mano in Cape Town and at BP Oakvlei Oakglen in Bellville. This person had withdrawn 78 200.00 ZAR from my account.

Upson seeing this I went back to Nedbank Sea Point where I was told by the manager to open a fraud case at the police station which I did. She also made a copy of the bank statements and sent a copy to the department who handles these cases.

After making the fraud case we also found that the card had previously been used at Grandwest Casino in Goodwood on the 14th of May taking 3 000.00 ZAR and at ABSA Mowbray on the 15th of May twice taking 180.00 ZAR and 130.00 ZAR respectively.

I have since been in constant contact with both banks as well as the investigating officer. After investigation it turns out that the CCTV cameras at the ATMS are all not operational so there is no footage of who stole the card. Nedbank Sea Point refuses to take any responsibility and HNB in Sri Lanka claim that it is Nedbank's responsibility and furthermore do not believe that someone could use the card without us giving them the pin.

We assume that there must be some sort of insurance that VISA carries for situations such as these. We desperately ask for your assistance in this matter as it is a very large amount.

Your help is greatly appreciated,

Sampath de Silva
