Lack of Timely & Appropriate Response

Upon deciding to attend Walden University, I was in constant communication with my admissions adviser, Nancy. She was very attentive, appeared concerned with my timely application submission, and followed-up with me weekly until I submitted my letter for acceptance. Nancy also contacted me one week prior to the start of class to quickly run through the select online areas I would find helpful or useful once classes began.

I began my Master of Social Work (MSW) classes December 1, 2014. Within three days, I was already overwhelmed with the full-time (two class) schedule while working, volunteering, and raising a family. I contacted both my instructors to inform them of my struggles. Only one instructor responded. I was to let her know if I have any other difficulty and to take it easy and not worry. I continued to struggle the following week. The other instructor advised me not to worry about posting responses, as long as I turned in my original discussion question assignment. Only later to be docked more than half my grade. I was also docked points for my submission; which the instructor commented that I obviously know the material because I provided a complete and in-depth response to the given assignment. I was appalled.

I contacted my admissions adviser by email that weekend to request a change in my schedule; from two classes (full-time) down to 1 class (part-time) status. I attached a read-response notification in the email and was notified the email was read that following Monday morning. However, I received no further contact from her; no response; no assistance. I scoured the Walden University online information for information on what to do and who to contact for assistance. Approximately a week later, I found the information for my academic adviser and sent him an email regarding my original request and continued difficulties.

As a previous honor student graduate with a BS in psychology, I strive to maintain high standards in all areas of my life. However, I was failing miserably at completing and maintaining all of my responsibilities (not to mention the stress of the holidays with no break from school at all). Students were expected to participate in classes on Christmas and New Years without one day for our families and the holiday season. By then, I had given up; I was completely frustrated and upset with Walden University's practices. When I spoke to someone on the phone about my financial aid, I felt like "just a number." I was too upset to even ask my academic adviser questions about withdrawing because he had no idea who I was. He didn't even seem concerned. I even told him I had not posted in my classes in over a week. No concern, no questions from him, absolutely flat-lined responses!

I sent the following email:

Brandon,

I contacted the financial aid office last week. I also called to speak to you the same day but was unable to reach you so, I left you a voicemail message. Today is Tuesday evening, January 13, 2015 (5 days since my message) and I still have not received a return call or email from you.

I am completely dissatisfied with the lack of concern/care and lack of communication from the Walden University staff toward the students. The cost of earning a higher education prevents many from obtaining a proper education. Walden University advertises its school as a prestigious university for students who are change makers of the future. The staff is also advertised as high achievers but they have continually failed to meet those high standards Walden sets for their students. How does Walden University expect their students to meet their high standards when Walden staff cannot provide the service the students deserve? At the high cost of $50,000 for a MSW, I expect my academic advisor and other staff of Walden to
1. Know their students, make every effort to personally know their students and what they are facing in life while attending Walden University to earn their degree
2. Express care and concern for the students and if the staff truly do not care, at least try to fake it.

Walden University is a private for-profit institution Headquartered in the Mill District in Minneapolis, Minnesota (my home state). I expect high-end service for the high-end cost of an education at Walden University.

I reached out, to three Walden staff (2 instructors, 1 admission advisor) within the first week of beginning classes seeking an alternative to full-time, 2 classes simultaneously with little to no response. Walden also advertises two-weeks free to try it out. I do not believe I should have to pay Walden University for a few weeks of struggling while seeking answers from someone helpful at Walden (which I still have yet to find).

This was his response:

Michelle -

Your withdrawal request was received as of January 6, 2015 35 days after the start of the term. You were advised of partial financial responsibility as December 16, 2014 if you were have withdrawn at that point. We also spoke after this conversation, but did not discuss withdrawal options.

I was out of the office as of January 8th through January 14th, so I apologize I was unavailable to take your call. Our academic advising team is typically in office Mon-Fri and can answer any questions you might have via 1-800-925-3368 opt. 3 or via e-mail at [email protected] in the event I am out of office.

Please let me know if you would like to continue with your withdrawal request or if you have any other questions regarding your options.

And then I receive another email:

In the future, should you decide to return to Walden University, you will need to complete a Readmission Petition. I do not understand how Walden University continues to operate in this manner. I live in Minnesota, yet I have to go through a Maryland location? I thought I was enrolling in a true Minnesota based university. Boy was I wrong!
